As a parent, celebrating Christmas with your baby and young kids is one of the best and most cherished parts of parenting. All of the struggles of the day to day grind seem to disappear as we watch our kid’s faces light up on Christmas morning.
There is so much fun to be had in the month of December, from looking at lights, decorating your own home, visiting Santa in the cute outfits, to watching them tear open presents on Christmas morning.
The only thing I don’t love about Christmas is the after-math. The gargantuan pile of new toys that you now have to find a place for. And look at. And listen to. Bah-humbug.
Fortunately, there is a solution! It’s called: wooden toys! (You may also know these as open-ended toys, educational toys, Montessori toys, learning toys, or developmental toys).
And we can get them from several different places, my favorites being Etsy and Amazon. (When buying from Etsy, just be sure to check wait and shipping times to be sure you get it in time for the holiday!)
After having 3 kids and buying (and subsequently getting rid of) countless large, loud, and distracting plastic light-up toys, I’ve come to love the simple wooden ones. Wood toys are great for a few reasons:
- They look good in your home! Some of these wooden toys are actually amazing decor items for your baby’s nursery!
- They don’t need batteries.
- They don’t take up as much room as many of the plastic toys.
- They aren’t as noisy as the battery operated light-up plastic toys.
- They promote creativity and imagination.
- In many cases, you are supporting smaller businesses who hand-make these products.
- Wooden Toys are good for any age, from the most basic baby toys to more creative ones for elementary school kids.
***Just be sure you aren’t getting and giving a toy with small pieces to a baby/child who may choke on it!
Below, I’ve grouped the toys into two groups, based on age. Of course, many of these toys are appropriate for multiple age groups and can be used for many years.
Wooden Toys For Babies
God, I wish I had this version of a play gym when my kids were little. The ones we used were so large and had such bold colors, I hated having them laying out on the floor. This one is sooo cute though!
Tip: Pair with a super soft mat or blanket for ultimate comfort. This little ABC rug would look adorable with it! Or, put the rug in baby’s room in general! And it’s super affordable!!! (Comes in other colors as well!)
This rainbow is from Etsy and I’ve bought multiple wooden toys from this seller for my photography studio. His craftsmanship is phenomenal! Incredibly low price point as well. I highly recommend!
These would make an adorable gift topper or stocking stuffer.
These are so pretty and can be made in other colors as well. I would definitely display these in the nursery.
Perfect for a boy or girl and another excellent stocking stuffer.
This comes in a ton of color options so you can get a few to match different outfits. Add a cute pacifier if giving as a gift!
Bonus Options
While these items aren’t wooden, they would pair perfectly with any of the above gifts: Muslin Blankets, Pacifiers, Stacking Cups (good for water play too!), Soft Chewable Blocks, An Organic Romper ( I brought my daughter home in the same one I listed below!), and Cute Bandana Bibs.
Toddler and Pre-School Age Kids Wooden Toys
How cute is this little tool set? It’s something I wouldn’t mind sitting around my house! Much better than the plastic one we had for my son. It was not sturdy and always tipped over!
Help your child learn their numbers with this little set! It’s so cute, I wouldn’t mind having it sit out on a shelf!
All three of my kids loved to buckle and unbuckle things. I am not patient enough to make this kind of thing on my own!
This thing is so versatile! Climb on it, under it, turn it over and seesaw with it or rock on it. Throw a blanket over it and it becomes a hideout. Turn it sideways and it becomes a little lemonade stand. The possibilities are nearly limitless for creative play and make-believe.
My youngest has a play kitchen very similar to this very affordable one pictured above. It’s something I don’t mind having sitting in our living room. I use a large cute basket to store all of the accessories and you can’t even tell it has toys in it!
Bonus Ideas for Cute Accessories and Storage:
As a professional photographer, I am particularly found of this cute wooden camera. Kids are soooo used to us always taking their picture nowadays, this is the perfect little gift to let them pretend they are a grown-up like us!
Wooden blocks are probably the most classic and timeless toy there is! And these ones are priced right!
Another perfect toy for boys and girls that they will continue to play with for years! As a bonus idea, you can get them new trains and tracks as they get older so you have gift ideas for the next few birthdays and holidays.
The trains would make great stocking stuffers as well!
This one is great for your child who can’t stop climbing on the furniture!
This cute toy can be used in so many ways and will be used for years. Your child can use it for baby dolls, a grocery cart, and it can also help a toddler learn to walk!
This one would be so fun for kids (and moms) who love to decorate as well as play pretend. Your child can make decorations for each season and holiday, just like you do with your real home!
I once bought a plastic mouth toy from the Target dollar spot for $3 and it was one of the most played with toys my kids had (for a few weeks at least, haha). This set would last way longer than the little one we had.
This basketball hoop would be perfect in a bedroom or basement for your sports loving kiddo.
