FAMILY PHOTO WALL IDEAS

Are you looking for some family photo wall ideas?

With family photo season here (fall), we need to get these photos hung up! After-all, there is no sense in spending all that money on outfits and the photographer if you aren’t going to do anything with them!

For years, I’ve kept an on-going list of ways I’d like to display photos in my dream house scenario. This blog post is full of these family photo wall ideas!

(This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a small commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you).

FAMILY PHOTO WALL IDEAS

This post is all about Family Photo Wall Ideas!

Living Room

Stack, layer, and mix your frame with plants, art, decorative items. This frame is just leaning here which makes it easy to change out for seasonal decor.

Shop This Frame on Amazon

You can also mix and match frame styles on your shelves. Here, we used an ornate shaped frame on an easel and a typical rectangle frame. They are both in neutral colors so it works.

If you are updating your shelf or starting fresh, brass or gold frames would look so good! I am in the process of incorporating more brass/gold into my own living room and kitchen!

Shop the Look:

Hallway

I have had this particular photo saved from Pinterest for years and no matter how my personal and home style changes, it continues to be one of my favorites!

This gallery wall works because while the home owner mixed frame styles and shapes, she kept in the same pastel color scheme. Everything is distanced pretty equally too. There are no large gaps. She managed to fill in any odd spaces with quotes and decorative items.

Shop the Look:

Go symmetrical with a set of 3 frames. Depending on your space, 1 to 3 rows will work here. The thick white mattes keep this looking pulled together.

The photos are also all from the same family photo shoot which is an awesome way to display all of your favorites in a really pretty manor.

Shop the Look:

Master Bedroom

The main area of your home is best for your family photos so everyone sees them.

Your master bedroom is the best place to display your wedding photos, in my opinion. This space is all about you and your husband.

Go big with your very favorite wedding photo displayed above your bed.

Pro Tip: If you are doing one large picture, you need to go bigger than you probably think! I’d recommend AT LEAST 16×24 for your frame size. (The actual photo can be smaller if you want to add a matte.)

Also, photos are typically in a 2:3 ratio. There will be cropping of your images with any other ratio size. Usually this isn’t a problem, but be sure to ask your professional photographer for help with cropping if needed.

Shop the Look:

Three things work in this photo: large white mattes, (Are you noticing a trend here?), the same style of frame but different sizes overlapping, and the chains that add extra design detail.

Gifts for Grandparents in 2020

This post is all about gifts for grandparents in 2020!

If 2020 has taught us anything it’s that we should be soooo thankful for our parents! and NEVER take them for granted!

I think back to March and April when we were in full lockdown mode and my parents missed my kids so much!

My mom would come over and stand in the yard just to see them in person for a few minutes every once in a while.

And most working parents realized how much they lean on their own parents for help with the kids. Especially with the juggling act we are all trying to survive with school days in disarray.

So, if there was ever a year to treat your parents to something special, I think this is the year to do it!

Seriously, who knows what 2021 will bring!

Let your parents know how thankful you are for them and all the help they give you!

gift ideas for grandparents coronavirus 2020

Amazon Firestick – With your parents stuck at home more than ever, give them plenty of options of things to watch on TV!

Personalized Facemask – In the event that your parents do choose to go out, make sure everyone that seems them knows how much they are loved. You can literally write it across their face! The possibilities with face mask personalization are pretty endless and I recommend checking Etsy for many options!

Comfort items are never a bad idea!

A cozy and cute blanket for their couch – Get this on it’s own or purchase with the Firestick so they have something to cozy up with while they watch all the new shows and movies they’ll have access to!

The best slippers – The final touch of comfort while at home! Personally, I will not walk in my house without slippers on. Not only do they keep my feet warm, they stop me from wearing shoes in the house. Something that is so important now!

A new robe – There is literally nothing else on earth that I get more use of than my robe. Some days, I never take it off. Your parents will thank you forever for getting them the most luxurious robe. And bonus, the ones I linked are unisex so you can get them matching one! Matching grandparents is the cutest thing ever! Your kids will love snuggling up with Grandma in this soft robe!

This next one is my favorite!

Not just for your parents/grandparents, but for anyone you may need a small gift for ~ friends, neighbors, co-workers!

Personalized Ornament to Commemorate the Year – Seriously, is there anything cuter or better than this for Christmas 2020? I’d get one for my own tree as well!

ANYONE would love an I Pad!

I Pad Mini – If your parents do not own I-phones and you do, consider getting them an I-Pad Mini so they can easily Facetime with you and your kids. It’s much cheaper than buying them a new phone and a lot safer if, heaven forbid, someone comes down with any Covid symptoms!

Kindle – Anyone who reads would love this- now more than ever, when trips to the bookstore are likely to be less frequent. Bonus Tip ~ Load it up with books/authors you know your parents will like to read!

Bonus Idea ~ Pay for a year of a grocery or restaurant delivery service, (Instacart, DashPass, etc.)

Accessories For Your Fall Photoshoot

This post is all about accessories for your fall photoshoot!

Getting fall photos scheduled and planned, getting both yourself and your kids ready, and then keeping them happy during the photoshoot can be a daunting task! So, while you are there, you will want to make the most of your photoshoot! For many people, these are the only professional family photos you will get all year, maybe even for a few years!

You can make the most of your photoshoot by just changing up a few simple accessories as you go!

Jean Jacket– Putting on a jean jacket can so quickly change how you look in photos.

Pro tip: Make sure it is pretty fitted. Even if that’s not the style you’d normally wear, extra bulk does not look good in photos!

Get a similar effect by adding a cute chunky sweater over your skirt or dress. This works for your kids too!

Shoes- You can totally change your look with a quick change of your shoes. Start with simple and then change in to something a little more dramatic like some beautiful tall boots.

I LOVE the lace detail on these! Click on them to go to Amazon and see it in more detail.

The fringe on these ones is perfect for fall photos!!

And I love the little folds on the gray ones.

These little booties are so cute too with their little cutouts. It’s kinda summery but the suede makes it perfect for fall!

Throw your hair in a loose ponytail or braid and slip on some aviators for an instant new look.

Another instant way to change up your look is to add a scarf and/or cute hat.

Jewelry can also have a nice little impact on the look of your photos. Go dainty first then add in some bolder pieces at the end.
You can get this anywhere, but if you are looking for something unique or meaningful, try Etsy!

Everything You Need To Bring To Your Family Photoshoot

This post is all about everything you need to bring to your family photoshoot!

I recently wrote a post about the steps you need to follow to ensure you get family photos you love! You can see it here: https://linleydiane.com/how-to-get-family-photos-you-will-love/

This post follows that up with the things you need to bring to ensure you and your kids are happy and look your best for the whole shoot!

(This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a small commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you.)

~For You~

Hair Accessories – If you wear your hair down, you will want to bring a few extra ponytail holders in case it gets windy or its super hot and your hair gets frizzy. It may just be better to pull it back in a cute pony. If you have girls, bring extras for them too. You’ll also want bobby pins (or some type of clips), hairspray, and your brush or comb.

Pro Tip: Make sure you take the ponytail holders off of your wrists before you shoot!

Makeup – At the very least, be sure to bring some matte powder and whatever you are wearing on your lips. Don’t forget a mirror!

Other Considerations – So, you won’t bring these to the shoot, but since we are on the topic of looks, consider using a teeth whitening system or getting on semi-permanent lashes from your local boutique in the weeks leading up to the shoot. (If you don’t want to spend the money at the boutique, get some falsies you can glue on yourself).

Pro Tip: If doing your own eyelashes, make sure you practice before the day of your shoot. It can be tricky! In fact, if doing your own hair and make-up, practice your whole look at some point before shoot day to make sure you can get it how you want it. This will also allow you to time how long it all takes so you aren’t rushing for the actual shoot.

~For The Kids~

Kids can be very likely will be finicky at some point in the session. They will need some coaxing and/or bribing, especially very young kids. In my previous post, I talked about some snacks to bring for them. You can see that here: https://linleydiane.com/how-to-get-family-photos-you-will-love/

Even with the snacks, some kids are just going to be uncomfortable in front of the photographer. In these cases, it may help to let them hold a comfort item, like a toy, stuffed animal, or blankie. No, the photographer cannot photoshop these out, so make sure any comfort items you bring will look ok in a picture. Is it ideal? No. But is it better than a crying child? Yes.

Basically, don’t bring anything huge or that lights up. You don’t want a giant T-Rex dinosaur toy in your photo and you certainly don’t want anything with flashing lights that is going to reflect on your faces. Think small wooden toys or a small neutral stuffed animal or blanket.

~General Items To Pack~

These may be things you already keep in your diaper bag and car, or you may need to add these to your list. Either way, make sure you have these items with you!

Baby wipes– you’ll most likely have to wipe a kids face or hands at some point during the shoot. (And if your child is still in diapers, make sure you bring some diapers too!)

Kleenex– it’s practically a guarantee that your child will need their nose wiped. Or drool wiped off their face if they are at a teething stage.

Bandaids– better to see a bandaid in a photo than blood. (I once had a mom cut herself on a thorn when we were doing an outdoor shoot and it just would not stop bleeding! We didn’t have any bandaids and were trying to stop it with a hair tie. Don’t be like us.) Bring a few bandaids; and flesh toned ones. No characters or tie dye ones unless you want Superman and the LOL dolls in your pics.

Safety Pins– you may need to pin your clothes. Or more likely, your child’s clothes. So many times with rompers and overalls, there’s a strap that’s just a little too loose and keeps falling down. Or the outfit is just a little too baggy overall.

Bug Spray– for the love of GOD, please use bug spray if you are shooting in a field or anything of that nature! There are SO MANY TICKS!! Not to mention if your child gets stung by something during the shoot, you can kiss any happy family photos goodbye. And while you are at it, get some poison ivy wash, just in case you accidentally touch any. And no matter what, be sure to shower and bathe yourself and your kids after the shoot!

~Posing Items and Props~

It’s very likely that your photographer will have these, but be sure to check with her to be sure. For outdoor family posing, it’s very helpful to have some sort of cute crate or chair (think vintage). This can be used to stand on, sit on, or place a child in if you have a rowdy toddler who likes to run.

Also, have a blanket to sit on and/or wrap up in. The blanket should be neutral or coordinate with your outfits and styling. (Patchwork quilts can look great if you are going for that look.)

Etsy is a great place to look for both of these items if your photographer is not providing them or you have something unique in mind.

This post was all about everything you need to bring to your family photoshoot!

How To Get Family Photos You Will Love

This post is all about how to get family photos you will love!

(This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a small commission if you purchase through my link, at no extra cost to you.)

As a professional photographer and mom of 3 young/semi-cooperative kids, I have been on both sides of this lens, literally, haha. I know what you want as a mom and I also know what is reasonable to expect from your photographer. Here are the tips you will want to follow to ensure you love your family photos.

PICK THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER

Ok, this very first step and sooo important! PICK THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER!!! Yes, I’m yelling, lol. This is imperative!

Here’s what I mean:

-If you like bright and airy photos, don’t pick a photographer whose gallery is filled with moody and contrasty images. You won’t get what you want!

Light and Airy
Dark and Contrasty

-If you want candid shots that show movement, giggles, and fun, do not pick a photographer whose portfolio is filled with stiff subjects looking right at the camera and smiling. And vice-versa.

Giggles (Photo by Sarenae Photography, 2019)

-If you want an outdoor family session, pick a photographer who specializes in outdoor family sessions! No matter how much you may love the personality of a photographer you know, if they don’t specialize in the type of photos you are looking for, you won’t get what you want! For instance, don’t hire a real estate photographer for your family photos. Don’t hire a photographer who only shoots in a studio for an outdoor shoot. In this example, a real estate photographer would likely not do well working with a group, (making the kids comfortable, posing everyone, and getting you to look your best). And a studio photographer may not know how to use natural light to the maximum potential for beautiful outdoor photos.

An important related point is this: Because you’ve done the homework to choose the right photographer up front, you can relax on the suggestions for your shoot. Do not send the photographer a long list or Pinterest board of poses you love or ideas you want to recreate, especially if they are very specific images. A good photographer will always do best if you trust in their process! If they spend the entire shoot trying to copy other’s ideas, no one is going to look natural and you won’t get what you want!

(If your photographer requests, an inspiration board you work on together can be a good jumping off point for the shoot, but please don’t expect them to copy anything else!)

HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

This next point is tied for the most important thing you can do, and this is often hard, but HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS FOR YOUR KIDS! (Yes, I’m yelling again because it’s just so important!)

If your child is shy, don’t expect them to ham it up for the camera. If your child is full of energy, don’t expect them to sit still for more than a few minutes, at most. If you have a baby, don’t expect them to be looking/smiling in every photo. You have to know your kids and what they are capable of.

Even the best photographer can’t change a child’s personality!!!

Not at cooperative ages for photos. But 5 years later, this shoot remains one of my favorites to date!

Talk to your kids ahead of time too. Let them know where they are going, what to expect, that a nice lady/man is going to be taking some pictures, and make it sound super fun! I find that most kids do best when they aren’t walking in blind to a situation, especially shy ones.

Plus, the point of a family photoshoot is to capture your family as they are at that point in time, shy or wild. So don’t try to force anything else!

TRUST AND LISTEN TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Ok, so you’ve chosen the right photographer and have set realistic expectations. So now, you need to trust and listen to the photographer!

Let the photographer choose the time of day that the shoot begins. Lighting is sooo important. The photographer understands light and what time you will need to begin the shoot to get photos at the right time of day. (This is called the golden hour and is in the evening before sunset.)

Beautiful dreamy light, right before sunset. (Photo by Studio Soozie, 2015)

Some parents will push back on that saying they want photos at noon because their child will be cranky later in the day. I get it. But, if you want photos at noon, you’ll want to do an indoor shoot in a studio. If you want outdoor photos with beautiful lighting, it’s going to have to be an evening shoot. So, have a low-key day with the kids, (this isn’t the day to go to the zoo), lay down and take a nap with them, bring snacks* for them, do whatever you need to do to get your child as perky as possible for shoot time.

*Pro tip: Do yourself and the photographer a favor and bring snacks that are small and don’t make a mess. Think smarties and cheerios. Nothing that will melt or can get all over the kids face and clothes. Some photographers may not be willing or able to Photoshop that mess out. Also, bring water to drink. Put it in a sippy cup or something with a straw if your child is still prone to spills.

https://linleydiane.com/everything-you-need-to-bring-to-your-family-photoshoot/

Also, BE ON TIME! Leave yourself plenty of extra time for traffic, detours, etc. Because you will be shooting close to sunset, if you are late, it will get dark. Sorry, can’t get cute photos in the dark! And if you are rushing and frazzled when you get there, it will show through in photos and your kids will pick up on that as well. So, get there at least 10 minutes ahead of schedule.

And if you aren’t totally ready when you get there, (maybe you need to get the baby in the dress you brought or feed them a bottle first) get there even earlier. If the photographer wants to start the shoot at 6:30, don’t roll in at 6:20 and need 30 minutes to get ready. If you do that, it will get dark before you are done! And even if it doesn’t get dark, your photographer has budgeted a certain amount of time for your session. She/he has every right to end it at the time limit, regardless of when you started. Which can mean less shooting time if you are late or not ready.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

If there’s one thing I know for sure as both a mom and as a photographer it’s this: it doesn’t matter how cute the rest of the family looks, if you (mom) don’t like how you look, you will not be happy with the photos!

With that in mind, mom should pick her outfit and accessories first (make sure to try it on!) and then style everyone else around that.

Mom should also get her hair and make-up done. Put on some eyelashes, go to Dry-bar. If it’s super windy or humid, probably don’t wear your hair down unless you want it blowing around or don’t mind frizz. Don’t forget your nails. Even if you don’t get your nails done, be sure you don’t have any chipping polish and that your polish matches your outfit, if you are wearing it.

Also, make sure you style everyone for the season! In the fall, the temperature can vary a lot, so when in doubt, plan in layers. A surefire way to ruin a shoot is if the kids are complaining that they are cold or hot. I promise they won’t look natural if their teeth are chattering, they have goosebumps and a snotty nose, or are overdressed and sweaty.

As a bonus, layers are a great way to get some variety in your photos without taking time to fully change.

If that sounds like a lot of take on, I agree. One of the hardest things (I think) is finding outfits for your whole family. Your photographer may be able to help with this or a stylist can.

As a jumping off point, I curated this list of affordable Amazon Prime Dresses for mom.

2 FINAL POINTS

Fall is the most popular time for family photoshoots. Most photographers book out several months in advance for these limited time spots. (Remember, they need to leave room in the calendar for rain out days/rescheduling too.) So, if you have a photographer you love and know you want to shoot your family, it is NEVER TOO EARLY to email them and get on their schedule. I’m talking spring here.

If you are looking for a mini session, most photographers open dates/times for these in the summer, even the holiday mini sessions. Both fall and holiday mini sessions sell out sooo fast (like within minutes of opening them for poplar photographers), so for whoever your desired photographer is, make sure you follow them on social media AND get on their email list so that when they announce a go-live date for their mini sessions, you can get a spot!

Finally, make sure you understand the photographer’s pricing and package structure. Some are all-inclusive, some charge a separate session fee and then sell packages later. Make sure you know what you are signing up for when booking (and when payments are expected) so you aren’t surprised (and pissed) when you thought you paid everything already but it was really just the session fee.

This post was all about getting family photos that you will love!
